Walk inward...Let Go...Emerge Renewed

The stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire, England has hosted a labyrinth walk on Halloween in years past.

I’ve been searching for a new way to celebrate the days around Halloween, and I’ve discovered something delightful!

A few years ago, we visited Avebury in England. Much larger than stone circle at Stonehenge, this beautiful site is used for many ceremonial purposes, including the celebration of Samhain. Held from sunset, October 31 to sunset, November 1. This ancient Celtic holiday celebrates, among other things, the end of the harvest season.

For many years, a Labyrinth walk was held at Avebury on Halloween, and participants were invited to walk the labyrinth as a way of letting go of things they might not want to hold on top any more and emerging from the Labyrinth renewed and energized for the year ahead.

Once COVID is over, I plan to make this an annual tradition with our Labyrinth at Wild Divine Retreat Center. But why wait until then to experience the magic?

In the past, I have used Labyrinths to celebrate the Winter Solstice with wonderful results. When my daughter was about 4 years old, I remember as she walked into the center, her intention was “letting go of mama’s hand.” What a beautiful intention she had of becoming more independent.

Years later, as I meditated on the Solstice, I was told to “stand at the Portal and See the Light,” which was a wonderful message. And when I walked to the center and meditated, I heard an even more powerful message: “Stand at the Portal and BE the Light!”

Walking a Labyrinth can be a powerful experience any time of year!

Before I started building Labyrinths from stones, I created temporary Labyrinths by stringing together strands of greenery and arranging them in a spiral shape. Another option would be to create a spiral using tealight candles.

The spiral shape has spiritual significance because, according to some spiritual teachers, things that aren’t in our Highest Good can’t enter the space, which makes a spiral Labyrinth a wonderful place to meditate.

If you want to work with the Labyrinth on a smaller scale, using a finger Labyrinth is a great option. You can find these on the Internet and print them out. I’ve created several using yarn and other sculptural materials.

Since we can’t be together physically this year, I am sharing with you a photos of one of my finger Labyrinths to print out and use this weekend.

Here are some instructions: (Please note, this is a copyrighted meditation that I have created. Please do
not share without written permission from me.)
1. Take a few deep breaths and get as relaxed as you can.
2. Bring all of your attention to the present moment.
3. Place your finger at the outside opening of the Labyrinth.
4. Very slowly, as you continue to breath, begin moving your finger towards the center of the Labyrinth
As you “walk” your finger towards the center, think about things in your life that no longer serve you.
What is something you are ready to let go of?
5. When you reach the Center, pause for a while. Let your hand rest and imagine you are sitting in the
center. Breathe deeply and imagine you are releasing to the Universe what you are ready to let go of.
Continue breathing until the releasing feels complete. Sense in your body the new space that has been
created
Now, invite the Universe to fill you with energy that will help you feel renewed and energized. Sense the
energy entering through your crown chakra and flowing down through all of your chakras, and
expanding outwards until it fills your entire body. As you continue to breathe, sense the energy
continuing to expand and flow outwards through the path of your finger labyrinth. As it flows, imagine it
Carving a Path of Light Pause for a few moments to soak up this energy.
6, When you feel ready, follow the Path of Light from the center of the Labyrinth until you reach the outer
opening of the Labyrinth. Pause for a few moments to anchor the experience.
If it feels right, extend gratitude to the Universe for this experience, and to the Labyrinth for holding the
energy. .
Reflect on how you can use your renewed energy to add to the Light of the World.
Your experience is now complete!

I hope you enjoyed your Labyrinth Renewal experience!
